Expos light the way to future careers

More than 1 200 learners attended two career expos recently, hosted by the City’s Community, Arts & Culture Development Department. The expos not only created awareness of careers and opportunities available to learners, but provided an opportunity to interact with industry professionals.
The first expo took place in January in Atlantis, where close to 300 learners attended from the Atlantis and Robinvale high schools.
More recently, at the end of February, nearly a thousand (952) learners from eight high schools – Kuils River Technical, Mfuleni, Nomzamo, Tuscany Glen, Masiyile, Macassar, Gordon and Bardale - attended the career day at the Belhar Indoor Sports Complex.
Exhibitors at the expos included a number of tertiary institutions, companies and City directorates, including the various departments from the Safety and Security Directorate.
Career Expos are aimed at capacitating and empowering youth by exposing them to various career and business opportunities.
‘Career expos are important as high school students, or anyone unsure of which career to pursue, can learn about potential jobs, plan their future, and network with professionals. It can also open the door to a profession not previously considered.
‘At the same time, they can find information on how to journey the path they’ve chosen, what certain jobs entail, whether it matches their expections and employment opportunities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
The next career expo will take place at the Retreat Civic Centre on 23 and 24 April.
